About The Old Bailey Proceedings

The Proceedings of the Old Bailey have already been published since 1674. It contains details of the trials which have taken place at the Old Bailey. It was initially targeted at a popular audience, and so was made very inexpensive. Initially, the Proceedings were a huge success, but later on, as newspapers and other media became popular, their sales decreased.

The Proceedings were meant to entertain and they achieved their aim. With the increase in the concerns about all sorts of crimes, there were books published on crime, justice and punishment like biographies, dying speeches of the criminals who were executed, about the lives of the criminals and also all the trial accounts. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, they had become a periodical, which was read avidly by the people of London to gather news and entertainment.
