The Proceedings of the Old Bailey

The Proceedings website offers students of all ages an opportunity to develop the skills of historical enquiry at a number of levels. These education pages aim to give pupils, particularly in Key Stages 2 to 4, an insight into crime and the law in the eighteenth century and at the same time allow them to develop valuable skills that can be used across the whole curriculum, from literacy and numeracy in Key Stage 2, to citizenship in Key Stages 3 and 4.

A well-dressed black man, Francis Williams, stands, book in hand in an ornate library. 'Francis Williams, The Jamaican Scholar' c.1745. Reproduced courtesy of and with thanks to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
