London Transport

In spite of being a lively presentation of the proceedings of Old Bailey, oldbaileyonline.org.uk also talks about the growth of London transport in the contemporary era.

During the beginning of the 20th century, the city of London became a metropolis and instead of walking people preferred trams and automobiles for traveling. With the growth and development of the London transport system, people in the London suburbs used to came to the city by omnibus, tram, railway and steamboat as well – details of which can be seen on our Associated Records page.

Changes in London Transport

Although helped a lot, the growth of London transport also increased the crimes in the city. Pick pocketing, theft, etc. were the fundamental offenses used to be tried in the Old Bailey Proceedings. However, these basic crimes emerged due to the expansion of traffic on a large scale were considered too trivial. Such cases were tried in the Central Criminal Court. On the contrary, these serious offences were apprehended at Old Bailey. All these are depicted extensively in our online texts.

Gender was something else that changed over time, details of which can be found by looking at our gender in the proceedings page.
